Jesus is standing on a beautiful mountainside in Galilee preaching to a large group of people. Looking down at their upturned faces, He does something strange. He calls them names!
«You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. «You are the light of the world. A town on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.»
Has anyone ever called you salt before? How many of your friends say, «Hey, Light, come here»? Of course, Jesus had a much deeper meaning in His words. He was telling us that Christians add flavor and guidance to people’s lives. Their kind acts and helpful words make our old world a better place to live and give friends, neighbors, and family members a little joy (light) in their sometimes sad (dark) lives. Neat, huh?
So get out there and spice up someone’s life today with a bit of salty kindness. If you see a friend down in the dumps with their face hanging around their knees, shine a little love light on ‘them. After all, you’re salt and light. You’ve got work to do!
