«When pride comes, then comes shame; but with the humble is wisdom» (Proverbs 11:2).
No other person in the history of humanity has been so widely criticized and loved, studied and unexplored, defended and attacked, as Jesus Christ. The truth is that nobody, not even those who reject Him as the Son of God, can ignore Him, because His own birth divides this world’s history.
From the moment He came into this world, there has been controversy over Him. When He was born, He was scorned because His mother had already been pregnant with Him before she married her husband. At the age of twelve, he argued with teachers in Israel and offered them a correct interpretation of the sacrificial system. During His ministry He lived among criticism, charges and lies from those who couldn’t stand His success. Controversies not only surrounded His teachings, but also His actions. He accepted children and didn’t flee from prostitutes and tax collectors; he also befriended women, Roman military officials, foreigners, and outcasts in society. As if that wasn’t enough, his work team was made up of mostly fishermen. His simplicity, friendliness and kindness toward others contrasted with the self-importance, arrogance and inaccessibility of Jewish religious leaders. Likewise, the depth of His teachings and the ease with which they could be understood clashed with the Rabbis’ complicated explanations about trifle and insignificant religious norms that mortified believers’ spiritual experiences.
Controversies having to do with Him didn’t even cease after He died on the cross of Calvary. More so, for three centuries the primitive church argued over who Christ was. There were those who denied His divinity, others who firmed He was some sort of ghost, among other nonsense from that time. He Himself warned that, before returning to this world, there would be those who would try to impersonate His identity to claim His authority and proclaim false messages in His name (Matthew 24:5, 11). So it’s nothing new if in these times another proponent comes up claiming that God has revealed a «new light; and all that by using Jesus’s name to legitimize his notions.
