Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine in the very heart of the house, your children like olive plants all around your table»(Psalm 1 23:3)
Many old century and modern houses in the Mediterranean region have a central patio that allows light to reach the interior windows. The patio is where vines are planted; they grow luxuriant due to the mild Mediterranean climate. The plants provide shade and act as decoration. The precious fruit of the grapevine is for the delight and nutrition of all family members. On the patio, kids play under the attentive gaze of their mother who supervises them from whichever corner of the house she may be in. At sunset, the patio becomes a living space for the entire family. This is where they dine and enjoy the evening, transforming the space into a social center where family ties are strengthened.
Today’s verse compares the mother of the family to these vines that climb up the patio walls. The children are also compared to olive branches. During springtime, the tree produces florets that are filled with many tiny seeds that will become future trees. These precious little balls announce the coming olive harvest, just like children predict the future generation.
What a wonderful description of the family where the mother’s central role is highlighted; she is always present and vigilant, like the vine on the patio, surrounded by children like olive branches around the family table! (Ps. 128:3). Of course, the father also plays a fundamental role in the family (1 Thess. 2:11).
In this idyllic environment, the best form of education that will last through time can be given and received. Just as the olive and the vine need God’s power to grow, divine intervention is essential to the family, because the best educational techniques would be worthless without the Spirit of the Lord. A supernatural power is needed for family stability. This text is very true, «Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken» (Eccles. 4:12). The third cord in the family is God’s undefeated power.
Today, remain open to God’s influence so that the educational principles that you implement will make your children grow up to love and obey GOD.
