“Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife”. Proverbs 21:9
Her name means «weak one.» Delilah was from the Valley of Sorek, to the Southeast of the territory of Dan, quite a few miles from Zorah, Samson’s home. Her liberal relationship with men (such as the Philistine princes) seems to indicate she was a prostitute. She was no doubt a very beautiful girl who knew how to make use of her physical attributes. As soon as Samson saw her, he was captivated by her figure. The young woman immediately realized she had trapped the most desirable young man in the region. Samson was infatuated with her, which reached his enemies’ ears. Then, the Philistine leaders paid the young woman a visit: they offered her the fabulous amount of 5,500 pieces of silver in exchange for finding out the secret of the Israelite warrior’s strength. She accepted the deal and prepared to attack.
Delilah began talking softly, launching a question full of venom, «Please, tell me where your great strength lies, and with what you may be bound to afflict you.» Samson played along with the young woman on three occasions, the same ones in which Delilah betrayed him. She showed her intentions at all times. But, after three failed attempts, the young woman’s strategy changed, «And it came to pass, when she pestered him daily with her words and pressed him, so that his soul was vexed to death» (Judges 16:16). The argument was repeated several days, «You don’t love me! I’ve given you everything and you haven’t!» «Don’t say that, my love,» Samson replied.
«You don’t love me! You have secrets you don’t tell me! Your heart isn’t with me!» Delilah went from pressuring him, to aggression and insults. His lover’s poisonous tongue crushed Samson’s spirits stripped the smile from his face and stole his desire to live. What a way to destroy a life! Not even the powerful Philistine army had managed to make him feel as miserable as Delilah did. The same person• who had awakened his greatest passion was now the main source of his great discomfort. Wanting a bit of peace, Samson ended up giving in and revealed the secret of his strength to Delilah: his covenant with God was symbolized by his hair. As soon as she heard it, Delilah betrayed him again and led him to his ruin. Israel’s great promise ended there.
A person who doesn’t love you will show it to you in an obvious way. But if you’re infatuated with them you won’t notice it. That’s why you need to ask God to grant you the wisdom to make the best decisions in this area in life.
