“With her enticing speech she caused him to yield, with her flattering lips she seduced him. Immediately he went after her, as an ox goes to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks” (Proverbs 7:21, 22).
Albert was a young man who loved girls. He really enjoyed boasting to his friends about his fleeting romances. He didn’t even hesitate to court two women at once. At the age of twenty it seemed like a game. But there are bad habits that are hard to overcome. And he seemed trapped in it. Even after getting married he fell for the temptation of going out with other women sometimes. Until one day someone made an embarrassing scandal that ended his marriage and made him lose his job.
A sexual affair is not a spontaneous or totally unexpected action. It’s rather the end of a series of small temptations to which you gradually yield. The problem is that many times we don’t perceive the promptings and interpret them differently. It’s also a result of spiritual neglect, an unstable relationship with God, imitating the deplorable actions of unbelievers when dealing with the opposite sex, excessive familiarity and feeding our minds with things that stimulate fornication: erotic movies, soap operas, romantic novels, porn websites, music that incites passion, etc. All those influences elevate sin and make it seem attractive, amusing or harmless to our senses. Little by little a subtle spider’s web is spun around us until it completely traps us in the desires of the flesh.
When a «desire» is born within us, we can choose what to do about it. We can totally reject its existence, because it needs our involvement to exist. However, we can also pay attention to it, reflect on it, fantasize about it and feed it. But if we do so, if we allow it to go through the avenues of our mind, we will soon be yielding our souls. We will have lost our own free will and the chance to choose. That desire will soon control us, requiring action and demanding that we satisfy it. That’s why the Bible says: «But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full grown, brings forth death» (James 1:14, 15).
Now is the time to feed your mind with uplifting influences and not with trash that will pave the way for future troubles. You have to pay a lot of attention to this matter. You will later reap what you sow today.
