«A gracious woman retains honor, but ruthless men retain riches» (Proverbs 11:16).
Nabal was a troublesome, powerful and ungrateful man. His bad character and bad manners had scarred the lives of those around him. At that time, David, the future king of Israel, had formed a small militia to defend himself from King Saul’s persecutions. However, it implied protection for several territories where there were thieves and robbers. That’s how Nabal benefited from the protection David and his men gave his land.
One day, David sent messengers to Nabal announcing that he would visit him with his men. True to his impolite attitude, the old rancher insulted the messengers and scorned David, warning them that he didn’t even know who they were. Nabal’s embarrassing words offended the troops, who, along with their leader, set out to punish the owner of a land they had protected for quite some time.
It seemed no one would save Nabal and his loved ones from a catastrophe this time. But one of the servants informed Abigail, Nabal’s wife, about the seriousness of the situation. She immediately ordered the servants to prepare food for David and his people and personally went to meet them in spite of the danger it posed. Abigail was grateful, courteous and generous. The future king of Israel was disarmed with such a response. He was even captivated by the behavior of that woman, whose wise attitudes made her beauty stand out. So, after Nabal’s death, David took her as his wife.
