«The silver-haired head is a crown of glory, if it is found in the way of righteousness’ (Proverbs 16:31).
Madrid (Spain) is a fascinating city. Its streets, parks and buildings are full of history. I don’t know what I like best about that city, whether it’s the museums, the food, the bookstores or good social life. But there’s something I’ve never seen in any other part of the world: the love of the elderly in Madrid. In the evening, they go out hand in hand and slowly stroll through the streets of the Spanish capital. There you see them, with the weight of the years, the tiredness, the memories; an extraordinary generation that lived through a very difficult time in Spain’s history, that endured it all, but managed to reach old age with their spouse.
In their days, the ones who are now elderly in Madrid didn’t have the advantages young people enjoy today. The great challenges their land was going through probably forced them to join forces and fight together. Life wasn’t easy, but they managed to build the scaffolds of a great nation. Today, the Spanish community greatly honors and respects them.
Many times, I’ve heard that love ends, that it’s not necessary to be «tied up» to a person for life. But, when it comes to romantic relationships, many people behave like fussy children who are temporarily obsessed by a toy, but when they get tired of it, they exchange it for another more entertaining one. And their whole life goes by that way, full of sentimental juggling in which they accumulate emotional wounds.
The biggest conquest of a lifetime is to genuinely love someone. It’s not attained in a night of passion nor is it the product of sentimental attraction. It’s rather the result of having shared a life together, enjoying the happy moments God gives you, such as children, outings, moments of intimacy, family life; but also struggling through challenging situations, such as financial crises, personal disagreements, conflicts when children grow, unexpected illnesses, family tragedies.
Elderly couples have a lot to teach us. That’s why it’s good to take an interest in them to learn about life and love. It’s very likely their testimony is very different than what you read on the Internet or what your friends say. But according to the Bible, it’s extremely valuable. Don’t forget!
