“As a bird hastens to the snare, he did not know it would cost his life” Proverbs 7:23
Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the illustrious Colombian writer, tells a jarring story in Chronicle of a Death Foretold. The whole town knows that Santiago Nasar will be murdered because he’s been accused of dishonoring Angélica Vicario. Only he and his mother ignore Vicario’s brothers’ plan to end with his life. It seems nothing will deliver him from death. Santiago doesn’t even imagine that the outraged relatives will carry out such an act. Instead, on the fateful day he gets up like any other day, willing to go about his daily business, but he’s followed by suspicious looks from people who do know about his sad future. The crime is committed despite the fact that many people knew about the assailants’ plans.
Is Santiago Nasar guilty of Angélica Vicario’s accusation? He doesn’t live to defend himself. The crime leaves a deep scar on the town inhabitants, who speak of the murder for a long time.
Could there be situations that seem obvious to others but imperceptible to those affected by them? Definitely. There are stories whose end is very obvious, except to the main characters themselves. What will happen if you take drugs, get involved with criminals, lead a promiscuous life and stop studying? The result is more than obvious. Problems await you, which could range from jail to illnesses that could claim your life. Why is it so hard to realize obvious things? Maybe because of the way we organize life, our ideology, prejudices or fears.
One of the greatest dangers of being infatuated with someone is that it blinds you to realities that seem obvious to those around you. That’s why it’s important to listen to others and perceive dangers and situations they may observe but seem to be hidden to us. If someone tells you that he or she is not the right person for you or could get you into trouble, don’t you think is worth it to calmly listen? Personally, I’ve known stories that were chronicles of a romantic disaster foretold, but the boy or girl hung on tooth and nail just to acquire wounds whose scars would take time to heal. The truth is that past actions will one day demand our attention, and the worse they are, the worse their consequences will be.
Ask the Lord to prevent your romantic relationship from being the chronicle of a foretold failure. Pay heed to your loved ones and people with experience. Most likely they will perceive what you don’t see.
