“He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, but whoever walks wisely will be delivered” Proverbs 28:26
On October 31, 2012, I was standing outside the Euro stars Madrid Tower Hotel in the Spanish capital. There were girls everywhere. Suddenly, a security team started yelling at everyone, «Everyone get down or the boys don’t come out!» Then, the human tide instantly fell to their knees. Minutes later, the members of the popular group One Direction appeared to greet their admirers. They walked by about two yards from where I was and they stopped a little, as if saying among themselves, «Do you see that? Even this guy is all excited to come see us!» Teenagers could be heard screaming everywhere. A little later, they returned to the hotel.
Why are those groups so successful? It’s because they appeal to girls just as they’re beginning adolescence. At that age, their bodies are changing, and they also experience psychological and social changes, such as mood swings, identity crisis, rebellion, idleness, periods of depression, suicidal thoughts, loneliness, among other things. At that stage in life physical attraction is given a huge importance. There’s also a need to be accepted by the group, as well as a search for identity, autonomy and independence, and of course, a strong attraction for the opposite sex. Those series of changes turn adolescents into extremely unstable entities, making them feel misunderstood, lonely, sad and yearn for affection.
Where can these girls find a place to fulfill their personal needs? Ideally, they would be in a solid home with parents who understood what they were going through. But you know that’s not always possible. That’s why, when these kinds of groups appear, they hit right on the target of millions of teenager’s needs.
Music groups aren’t the best way to learn about true love, don’t you think? If you’re a teenager, you’re going through a very unstable stage in your life. This why the lyrics of the songs you listen to appeal to the concerns of your youth. Perhaps your parents don’t know how to tell you things in a more polite manner, but don’t break your ties with them. It’s best not to make drastic decisions for the moment. It’s important for you to read interesting books about adolescence and youth that will better explain things. Plus, God understands what’s happening to you. He’s made provision to meet your needs. Seek Him today.
