You shall rise before the gray headed and honor the presence of an old man, and fear your God: I am the Lord»(Leviticus 19:32).
One day, an eighty-year old man was sitting at home, looking out the window with his forty-five years old son who had become wealthy and highly educated
A crow landed in a nearby tree and the old man asked,
«What is that?
«His son answered him:»
A few moments later, another bird settled in the vicinity and the old man asked,
«What is that?»
The answer was the same:
This was repeated four times in a row and the son lost his patience, exclaiming, “Why are you asking me the same question over and over again? I’ve already told you it’s a crow, all these birds are crows! Don’t you understand that?
The old man walked silently into his bedroom and came back with an old worn out diary which he had kept since his son was a little boy. He opened it and pointed to a paragraph for his son to read. There, the following was written:
«Today, my son turned three. We were together, he and I, sitting on the sofa, when a crow landed close to the window. He asked me: ‘Daddy, what is that?’ and I answered him: ‘A crow.’ He asked the same question twenty-three times and I gave him the same answer twenty-three times. I couldn’t help but smile and hug the little one, feeling a deep affection for my little son.
According to the Bible, «wisdom is with aged men, and with length of days, understanding» (Job 12:12). We will always have a generation of wise elderly men and women who have enough experience to appreciate the things from a unique perspective. Thus, the verse urges us to stand up for the elderly, giving them the honor, they deserve and showing them affection and respect. After all, they are the ones who helped us grow and worked to leave a better world for the next generation
The Good News Translation Calls Psalm 71 «The Prayer of an Elderly Person,» and it is a plea for God to protect old men and women as they advance in «Do not reject me now that.
I am old; do not abandon me now that I am feeble (v. 9). You can be the instrument that becomes an answer to this prayer. God may call you to lighten the load of an elderly person who may or may not be a part of your family
