«For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb.
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well» (Psalm 139: 13, 1 4.)
The perfection of the human machinery is always a source of amazement. A closer look at every organic system opens a door to a mysterious and infinite microcosm. Let us think of a simple dialogue and learn how the body processes it.
«What is the sales manager’s name?»
«His name is James.»
The nerve endings of the inner ear receive the sound vibrations and transform them into electrical impulses. The signals pass from one neuron to the other through the complex synaptic communication via neurotransmitters. The communication occurs simultaneously on both sides of the brain until it reaches the auditory area pathways. So, the person «hears» the sound of the words and quickly proceeds to interpret it. To do this, specialized neurons send signals to the cerebral cortex, specifically to Wernicke’s area which «understands» the message. From there on, the brain needs to produce the sales manager’s name.
By electrical and chemical means, new nervous cells are set in motion to locate the name. There is no specific area of data hosting since they are scattered across different locations. Once found, the name is to be uttered using a phonetic code. ‘The phonetic instructions are linked to Broca’s area in the brain, in the left frontal lobe. From there, the information travels to the motor cortex, the only area of the brain that can give orders to the speech or articulatory organs (vocal cords, larynx, tongue, etc.). Then comes the answer: «His name is James.» Every human behavior or organic function is extremely complex. Behind it is the infinite genius of our Creator. Today’s text describes a personal and loving action: «You formed my inward parts.» Dear reader, God knows each and every cell in your body because He created them and He shaped them. The result is the unique and inimitable human being you are: privileged and special, created to honor heaven and serve others.
Thank God for the numerous gifts you have received. Even if you have weaknesses, like any other person, the virtues He granted you far exceed them. Moreover, the Creator possesses everything you need to address your shortcomings, «And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus» (Phil. 4: 19) •
