«Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, This is the way, walk in it,’ whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left»(Isaiah 30:21)
The sense that is most commonly lost by human beings is the sense of hearing. Starting at the age of forty, people tend to suffer from slight hearing loss, although many of those affected do not seem to notice it. However, by the age of sixty-five, one in three people have serious hearing problems. And if we take into account people who are eighty-five years old, half of them suffer from significant hearing loss. The risks are high and some are very serious. The affected can lose important information, be at risk of accidents, experience embarrassment, irritation and frustration when they have to ask people to repeat themselves over and over again. In more serious cases, the person loses his or her independence, the ability of acquiring new knowledge and may even suffer from paranoia and depression. Hearing aids can certainly help but they have some significant limitations.
It is sad to see our loved ones suffer from sensory impairment or deterioration. But the ability to hear loses its importance when we compare it to the ability to listen to God’s voice, as today’s verse describes. That’s why we have to constantly tune into the Creator—as pilots did for decades by listening to radio acoustic signals. Before the arrival of the GPS, that navigation system warned them when they deviated to the right because they could hear a series of short sounds, such as the Morse code dots. If they drifted to the left, the sounds were long, like the Morse code dashes. This is how they avoided deviating from the airway and finally reaching the desired destination. The system was efficient as long as they constantly tuned in to the radio station.
We also have the responsibility of staying in tune at all times to lead the vessel of our life to a safe destination. God wants us to listen to His voice through the Holy Scriptures, which is like a radio station that constantly warns us to remain on the right path. Sometimes, God speaks through other people, impressions, and intimate spiritual experiences, but this is only possible when we are constantly tuned in to Him. What a great privilege to know that God is ready to show us the right path! If you feel disoriented or unable of making decisions, listen carefully to God’s voice. Thus, you can pilot the ship of your life in the right direction and reach the destination that God has chosen for you
