«By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life» (Proverbs 22:4).
During my first year as pastor, I had to minister to eight congregations in the central Mexican region. I arrived in that region, where the gospel was just barely laying roots, as a promising graduate of the Adventist University with two bachelor’s degrees. I met Mr. Francisco Avila and his kind family there. Since I was still single, I stayed at their home when I visited Tejupilco, the town where they lived.
Mr. Francisco was a simple man and had little educational training. However, he had a truly admirable faith. Every morning, before the sun rose, he would get up to pray and communicate with the heavenly Father. His words, his countenance, and his attitudes revealed that he had been with Jesus at dawn. He greatly respected me, since I was the church pastor, but that didn’t prevent him from expressing his ideas with great conviction. In addition, every week, along with his wife, he would give Bible studies to his friends and neighbors. His small grocery store was truly an evangelistic center in his neighborhood.
Compared to Mr. Francisco, I felt like a man of little faith. There was probably more information in my mind than in his. However, his spiritual experience was much more solid. Compared to him I seemed like a little mouse, trembling when faced with the most minor adversity. In contrast, he remained as steady as an oak tree when facing any church tempest. So, on several occasions I begged the Lord to help me depend on His Word.
Have you ever wondered whether you are a person of little faith? Do you depend on God as you feel you should? It’s true that today’s secular environments weaken the development of faith. Yes, sometimes it seems like God is not as necessary nowadays to solve life’s problems. That’s why is very important to follow the biblical formula to strengthen our faith: «So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God» (Romans 10:17).
Don’t allow yourself to be subject to senseless philosophies and ideas. Don’t let anyone convince you that this world’s destiny only depends on human beings. How frustrating to think that way! Instead, draw near to God today. Ask Him to help you overcome your lack of faith and place your life in His hands. Make God part of every one of your activities and trust His guidance. I assure you that this will allow you to enjoy the happy times God has in store for you today.
