«A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself; the simple pass on and are punished» (Proverbs 27:12).
Spiritual indifference and lack of consecration to God are some of the most dangerous conditions for many young people. Jesus explained it this way: «When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So, shall it also be with this wicked generation» (Matthew 12:43—45).
According to Jesus’s words, we can cast out evil from our lives, but while we’re in this world, we can’t destroy it. Evil will always be looking for an opportunity to counterattack and reclaim lost territory. It’s true, we may keep it at bay, but if we’re careless, it can cause disastrous effects on those who have been renewed by God.
How can we have that attitude? By being spiritually lukewarm, like Revelation 3:15—16 says. That is, you don’t reject God, but you don’t want to make a commitment to Him; what’s more, you don’t believe you lack anything or that you’re a bad person because «you don’t harm anyone.» Of course, that kind of religion can’t satisfy anyone, so your heart is «hungry for the world.» When you’re in that state, you’re an easy prey for Satan’s temptations. That’s why the Lord severely reprimands those who have that attitude (3:17) and recommends buying gold refined in fire (genuine love), white clothes (Jesus’s righteousness) and salve (the Holy Spirit) to overcome the lukewarm state (v. 18). Thaws why is very risky to have an empty spiritual life and not enjoy the blessings of the gospel. We’re actually called to live a fully stashing spiritual life.
