Missionary Paton knew that if he didn’t act fast, all that he and the others had worked for would be destroyed. The church was already burning, and the attackers would soon set the house ablaze.
The devil doesn’t like the good news of salvation spreading around the world and often fills innocent minds with thoughts of violence against those who preach His Word.
«I’m going out,» the missionary told his companions hiding in the safety of their simple, modest home. «I’ve got to try to save the buildings. Lock the door behind me so no one can get in.
«Sending one last prayer heavenward, he stepped into the night. Running to the wooden fence connecting the two structures, he tore out a section, trying to keep the flames from spreading to the house. That’s when he noticed shadows creeping about him. Glancing up, he saw the dark forms of the local people, their angry faces lit by the crackling fires.
“Kill him!» one of them ordered.
Missionary Paton lifted his hand. «My God is stronger than fire and spears and anger, “he said in their language. «If you hurt me, you’re hurting my heavenly Father. “Suddenly, as if to underline his words, a great wind swept through the forest and raced across the clearing. A torrential rain, the type that’s common in that part of the world, immediately followed. In seconds it extinguished the fires, leaving behind a very astonished, very wet mob. Panic seized the people. Dropping their torches and spears, they ran back into the night.
Missionary Paton returned to his companions, and together they thanked God for the rain and the power of His presence.
