Hany had just received a gift: a remote-controlled toy helicopter. What a thrill his father’s gift gave him! He had the controller in his hands to make the helicopter fly up high when he heard, «Ready, Hany?»»Ready!!» he replied. How disappointed he was when the helicopter did not take off. On the outside, it looked perfect, but something inside was not working. What could it be? Dad opened it up and found that it did not have batteries. That same thing often happens to us: on the outside, we look radiant, but on the inside, we have no batteries. Too many worries, frustrations, and emotions build up inside us that leave us without spiritual batteries. It is impossible to fly like that.
When we find ourselves immersed in family and financial concerns, dissatisfaction with work or the church, and painful memories, we lose the joy of being Christians. We lose our charge spiritually. Emotions follow us like ghosts in the dark inner rooms of our thoughts and it becomes difficult to practice a joyful religion. If you feel like that, it is time to recharge. How? There is no exact formula that works the same for everyone. If we take a look at some characters in the Bible, we can use them as references for our personal situations.
For example, Mary, «weeping began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil» (Luke 7:38). wounds of life had left a mark on the spirit of this woman who found her freedom in Jesus and renewed her spiritual energy by surrendering to Him. Peter «went up on the housetop to pray» (Acts 10:9) because speaking with God alone in prayer was how here charged his batteries to continue with the difficult mission the Lord had entrusted to him. Nicodemus was «a ruler of the Jews . . . [who] came to Jesus by night» (John 3: 1, 2) to pose to Him the questions that disturbed his peace. He found relief in the Master’s answers.
Just as a toy that does not have batteries cannot be enjoyed, we cannot enjoy life, human relationships, or religion if we are not spiritually charged. Surrender to Jesus, pray, find answers to your questions in the Bible, and do not forget to do all this every morning. Do not leave home running on empty.
“Aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business” (1 Thessalonians 4:11).
