EIGHT COLPORTEURS were packing their bags to visit Costa Rica, where they would receive awards for their great success in selling Christian books. It was a well-deserved trip. One young woman who was part of this very select group ate an enormous amount of food, including dessert, the very morning they set out on their trip. During the trip, she began to have a terrible stomachache and when she finally arrived in Costa Rica, the pain continued. Such a promising experience turned out completely tarnished because of the consequences of an uncontrolled appetite.
Diet is a vital matter on which we should reflect at length. When we came out from the Creator’s hands, the plan He gave us for our diet was perfect. God’s original idea was for us to eat a diet based on simple products. God said, «l have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food» (Genesis 1:29). But that was a very long time ago. Today, after many generations and with sin reigning in the world, we misuse food. What attracts us is, unfortunately, not the food God prepared for us; rather, we are attracted by highly stimulating, refined products and meat. As a result, many illnesses that could have been avoided are affecting humanity.
At the present time, we associate diet with reward; we eat in an emotional way. Thus, if our emotions are not well balanced, our palate is not, either. This has a lot to do with the widespread problem of addiction to food. If you feel that you are dependent on food and, in particular, on certain types of refined and high-caloric food, it would be a good idea to pause and reconsider, to prevent illness from finding you. Go to God, ask Him for help, and learn how to eat in a healthy, balanced manner, in the right amounts, and expressing gratitude to the Creator.
We need to learn to eat in the most natural way possible, that is, similar to the diet indicated in Genesis that we just mentioned. Remember that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and that the Lord is interested in your having health. A healthy mind in a healthy body.
«Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God»(1 Corinthians 10:31)
