«The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion»(Proverbs 28:1).
On June 5, 1986, I was sitting on the bleachers of the Cuauhtémoc Stadium in Puebla (Mexico) to watch the match between Argentina and Italy during the World Cup that year. Right in front of me was the tunnel through which the players would come out. Suddenly, Diego Armando Maradona appeared, followed by the Argentinian team, and next to them the Italians came out. I went closer with other guys to loudly cheer with emotion at the modern gladiators. But the players were very focused. Alessandro Antonelli scored for Italy six minutes into the game. A while later, Maradona scored the tying goal. He would become a world soccer legend during that tournament.
Less than ten countries have managed to win the World Cup. Those teams get to the sports event knowing that they can win. Other teams have other kinds of expectations. For instance, they settle for getting to the second round or even getting to the semifinals. The point is they don’t believe they are able to win the cup, even though they have great players and favorable conditions to do so. They argue that soccer isn’t very important, traditional, or historic, among other things. And with so many excuses, they end up losing. But there are teams that do believe they can win, even though the style in which they play and their training leave much to be desired. That’s the great difference. And although it seems simple, it’s the way it is. Behind big sports victories is the assurance that it’s possible to be the champions. Something similar happens in life. In spite of having great advantages, many young people don’t believe they’ll have a promising future. They rather settle for very little and have mediocre attitudes, participating in the game of life without any hope of winning. They focus on their supposed disadvantages and claim they don’t have money or education or physical attraction. And those kinds of attitudes condition them to be defeated. The worst thing is that defeat seems like something completely natural to them. They already expected it! Why? Because that’s how they’d preconditioned their minds and they didn’t do anything to build a different future.
Focusing on your goals, physical preparation, commitment to God and a good attitude can make any young person a world champion. Your skin color, nationality, height, economic or social standing don’t matter here. You build your own history. Do you believe it? Your future will be revealed through your answer.
