Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 1 PETER 5:8, NKJV
Back in 1969 my father traveled to Europe to attend meetings in Amsterdam, Netherlands. After the meetings he toured Europe. Growing up, I always remember looking at the pictures he took during that trip, but there was one that always stuck out in my memory. It was taken at the Roman Colosseum in Rome, Italy. History and legend teach that during the glory days, Romans would hold events that included lions roaming around the center arena. In one of the pictures, my dad had climbed up on one of the side rails at the Colosseum. He would show us the picture and then he would ask us, «Do you know why I climbed up on that railing?» Even though we already knew the answer, we always asked why. «In case there were still any lions left roaming around!» As little kids, we loved that story and that picture.
When I was in college and spent a year in Europe, I was excited to finally visit the Colosseum myself. When I got there, can you guess what was the first thing I did? Yep, I looked for a similar-looking rail, and I climbed up and asked my friend to take a picture. My friend thought that was strange, but I soon explained why. About five years later I returned to Rome, this time, with my wife. Once again, we found a similar spot in the Colosseum. Together we climbed the rail and took the picture again. Just recently, I returned to Rome again, this time with my wife and my two sons. You guessed it. I had been telling them the original story of my dad since they were little, so this time it was our turn to take the traditional picture in Rome. This time, all four of us were up on the rail, in case any lions were still running around.
Although that was a humorous story, the Bible reminds us that Satan is like a lion, prowling around. Fortunately, we don’t have to worry as long as every day we hang on to GOD, our perfect railing, where we can be safe!
