“No one is holy like the Lord, For there is none besides You, Nor is there any rock like our GOD.” 1 SAMUEL 2:2, NKJV
After marveling over the Treasury in Petra for a while, we moved on, since there is a lot more to see in this amazing place. Fortunately, the friend who was traveling with me was a student studying archaeology, so he knew lot of things about this place. We walked down into a valley where there were countless caves and structures cut out from the rock.
He then suggested we should hike up to another amazing structure called the Monastery, which was very similar to the Treasury. He said the hike was long and challenging but that it would be worth it; he added that the Monastery was probably twice as big as the Treasury and also chiseled out of rock. I was already impressed by the size of the Treasury; I couldn’t star to imagine how huge and imposing the Monastery would be.
Sure enough, the journey was long and dangerous as we went up the narrow, steep path. At some points we walked along tall cliff in temperatures that climbed above one hundred degrees. When we got there, the Monastery was truly incredible. It was also carved out of the rock, but it was done in such a way that we were able to climb to the top, 165 feet high! This was by far the largest monument in Petra, and amazed me that it was still in such great shape after thousands of years. That’s because it was made out of rock.
Rocks are solid, which is why GOD is compared to a rock many times in the BIBLE. It says GOD is my rock and refuge, my fortress and my foundation. Have you ever sung “Rock of Ages” in Church? All these are reminders that GOD is strong and we can lean on Him and always count on Him for strength.
