Wise friends you wise, but you hurt yourself by going around with fools. PROVERBS 13:20 CEV
Mount Hood is one of my favorite destinations for outdoor hikes and activities. On one occasion, when I was invited to speak at a church in Portland, Oregon I booked my return flight a day later in order to have time to make a quick trip to the mountain. The pastor who had invited me to speak at the church was a good friend and agreed to visit Mount Hood with me. I wanted to do something little different and learned that a fun way to see Mount Hood is by snowshoeing. My friend was up for the challenge, so we made our plans and found a place to rent gear. Soon we arrived at the base of Mount Hood, a place called Government Camp, where we’d rent our gear.
Now there are two things you need to understand about Mount Hood. First of all, it has a bunch of glaciers on it, so there is always a snowy trail somewhere on the mountain, no matter what time of year it is. Second, I had not brought any winter gear with me, so we not only had to rent the snowshoes, we also had to rent boots, coats and snow pants. We drove up to the highest spot we could reach, parked, and geared up. Over the next several hours, we trudged up the mountain at a slow, even pace. Sometimes we’d have to rest a little. Other times it got so steep that we had to stop to rest every few minutes. The higher we got, the more amazing the view was. For my friend and I, it was amazing experience to share together.
Friends are a blessing from God, and you should be smart about who you decide to have as friends. Some friends will bring you down and actually make your life miserable. Avoid having these kinds of friends. Select friends who will bring joy to your life. The message from today’s BIBLE verse is as clear as it comes.
