“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” MATTHEW 7:13, 14 NKJV
A few years ago, I stood at the base of Mount ST. Helens, getting ready to hike. The sun was about to rise and we had a full day ahead of us in order to make it to the rim of the crater. The violent eruption had caused a massive landslide that now left a mile-wide crater at the top of the mountain. Our goal was to climb to the rim of the volcano, about eight thousand three hundred feet above sea level. The first part of the climb was mostly flat, easy, and wooded. Soon there were no more trees, and we entered the next type of terrain-big, jagged boulders. Next, we were faced with powdery pumice, which was hard to walk through. We continued to climb, hour after hour, until was finally reached a large, snowy section of the mountain. The snow was a welcome sight because it was much easier to hike on the snow than on the large boulders or pumice.
The new challenge was that we now had reached a very steep part of the climb. With the slippery snow, we had to be extra careful. We had to slam our boots hard into the snowpack in order to get enough of a grip to take the next step. One missed step would cause us to lose traction and slide down the steep mountainside. Soon we even encountered crevasses-huge cracks in the snow pack that we did not want to fall into.
Though this seemed dangerous, was there any better way to proceed? The BIBLE tells us that there is a path in the world that leads to life. This is the more difficult path. I’m pretty sure you follow what the BIBLE is saying. Following GOD will not always be the easiest path, but you can be sure that it’s the path that will lead to happiness, joy, love, and life.
