I long to dwell in your tent forever and take in the refuge in the shelter of your wings. PSALM 61:4, NIV
A few years ago, my family took a road trip that brought us to Death Valley, California. It’s one of the hottest places on earth, and we were not disappointed. As we approached the valley from Nevada, it was ninety eight degrees, and we thought it was toasty. Fortunately, our car had air conditioning, so we only appreciated the heat when we stopped. As we approached Death Valley, the first thing we noticed was that we drove down into the valley-below sea level. When we finally made it to the bottom, the landscape seemed to be completely void of or animal life. We finally found a spot to stop and opened the car doors. Kapow! We couldn’t believe how hot it was-114 degrees!
We stayed in the valley for several hours, exploring, and every time we went from one place to the other, we enjoyed cooling off in the car for a few minutes. Then all of a sudden the air conditioning stopped working! The inside of the car started to heat up. You know, when you leave a car parked in the sun, it usually gets hotter inside the car that outside? Well, we were getting cooked in the car as we drove along! I finally pulled over and told the family that we needed to pray about this. Our road trip would last another eight or nine days, and we wanted to continue our trip with air conditioning!
We prayed and moved on. You probably won’t be surprised to learn that our air conditioning suddenly started working again!
The BIBLE says that the best shelter is under GOD’s wings. Just as birds use their wings to protect and shade their young, there’s always room for you under GOD’s protective wings, even in 114-degree heat! GOD doesn’t force us to be there; it’s a choice we’re each given. I hope today you choose to take shelter under GOD’s protective wings.
