But one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals.” REVELATION 5:5, NKJV
During our time in Africa, we drove through one of the most famous animal reserves, Kruger National park in south Africa. We immediately saw many different creatures wandering around such as baboons, impala, zabras, wildebeest, and giraffes. There were several other animals we were even more excited to see such as hippos and rhinos, but more than anything we were anxious to see lions.
A reserve is nothing like going to a zoo in north America. In a zoo, the animals are in an enclosure, and they really have nowhere to go, nowhere to hide. At a reserve, there are hundreds of square miles where the creatures can roam. That is very good for them, but for us, finding them required patience and good eyesight! Toward the end of our day we were beginning to get concerned because we still hadn’t spotted any lions. Then suddenly up head we saw two or three cars stopped in the middle of the road. Our hopes were high as we slowed down and stopped to see if we could see what they were looking at. To our shock and surprise, calmly walking down the middle of the road was a full-grow lioness with four lion cubs following her. We were so excited! I pulled out my camera to star taking pictures. Little by little they got closer. At first, I thought they were just trying to cross the road, but they were actually walking along the road toward us. A few moments later, the lion family walked within four feet of our car! I never dreamed we would get close to a lion!
Our verse today refers to JESUS as the Lion of Judah. Seeing those powerful lions in Africa brought to life images of how powerful JESUS is and what He’s done to save us and deliver us from sin. What blessing it is to have such a powerful protector looking out for us today!
