I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word. PSALM 119:15, 16, NIV
The Chilean government says there are 123 active volcanoes in the country! Once, we decided to go visit one of the most active volcanoes in Chile-Osorno, which has erupted eleven times since 1575! In the winter there’s a big ski area on Osorno, but it was closed when we visited during the summer. We found out that tourist could ride the chairlift to the top just to look around, and we decided to go.
First of all we were equipped with heavy snow pants and big coats. The chairlift had open-air chairs and it would take almost an hour to get to the top. The view from the top was spectacular. It was a clear day, and we could see miles and miles of lakes, other volcanoes, and mountains all around us. As we rode the chairlift down, my youngest son, who was only about two years old, dropped his pacifier. It had been attached to his coat by a little strap, but somehow it disconnected and fell, never to be seen again. To this day, we often comment and laugh about his pacifier, because that one event caused him to stop the habit of using a pacifier.
Everyone has bad habits. Maybe we eat between meals or spend too much time engrossed in electronics. Perhaps you are always arguing with your parents or siblings.
God wants to help us break bad habit. Our verse today says we should meditate on God’s precepts.” Precepts are principles or guidelines that steer our behavior. When we stay close to God and focus on His will for us, He will help us stop our destructive habits.
