And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. COLOSSIANS 1:9, 10, ESV
After climbing around the banyan tree in Maui, we continued hiking higher and higher into the rain forest. Soon we walked along a high ridge looking down over a valley we had just crossed. Then, after crossing a wooden bridge where there was a small waterfall, we suddenly arrived at the fascinating part of the hike, and enormous bamboo forest right at the edge of the river.
Immediately upon entering the bamboo forest we were enveloped in darkness, even though it was the middle of the afternoon. Bamboo is a grass, but this grass can grow up to one hundred feet tall. At the top of the shoot are tufts of foliage, and since the bamboo shoots grow so close together, the foliage creates a dense canopy the blots out much of the sunlight. It created a mysterious feeling down below where we were. The bamboo also grows very close together, not like in a rain forest where there is some space between the trees. Bamboo is quite fascinating. The shoots are incredibly strong and often cut and used for many different purposes. In some countries I’ve even seen construction job sites using scaffolding made from bamboo. Pound for pound, it is said to be stronger than steel! One of the most amazing things about bamboo is how quickly it grows. Certain types of bamboo have been known to grow up to three feet in one day!
Can you imagine if people grew that fast? There is one part of us they would be wonderful to grow quickly in, and that’s spiritual growth.
Open your heart to God today and ask Him to help you grow spiritually. Our verse today says that as you grow, you will bear fruits of the spirit and your knowledge of God will grow!
