I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust.” PSALM 91:2, NIV
A couple of years ago I traveled with my family to San Juan, Puerto Rico. The top thing on my list to see and do there was to go to the old city and visit the fortress that looked out over the ocean from a high bluff. I had seemed many pictures of it before, and many friends had told me about this old historic structure. As is the case in many cities, our first challenge was to find a place to park. Once we parked, we walked a little way toward the fortress. The approach to the fortress was impressive. As you approach, there is a huge grassy clearing so that all you see at distance are the big stone walls surrounding the fortress.
As I walked toward the walls, I tried to imagine what it was like in the old days when people were inside the walls and attackers were on the outside trying to get in-there were no airplanes or helicopters in those days. If you wanted to get over or through ten-foot-thick walls of stone, it was not easy, especially when there was a deep moat surrounding the fortress. I’m pretty sure the people on the inside felt pretty safe, especially since the walls are still standing there today, hundred years later.
It reminded me of the old hymn, “A Mighty Fortress.” Have you ever stopped and noticed the lyrics of the hymn?
It says that God is a mighty fortress for us and that He will never fail us. It goes on to say that our enemy is strong and is trying to get us and that we should not trust in our own weak strength to win the battle. It says we should not fear because God will triumph and that his kingdom is forever! As I walked around the fortress that day and explored all the little secret areas, my mind thought about how awesome it was to be protected by God, the Mighty Fortress
