I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. PSALM 139:14, NIV
When I was attending architecture school at Andrews University, we took classes about the history of architecture. It’s valuable to understand how things were done in the past in order to properly plan for the building of the future. As the class progressed, each student developed favorite architects and styles of architecture. My favorite architect was a Spaniard named Antonio Gaudi.
When I had the opportunity to study in Europe for a year, I hopped on a train to Barcelona to see my favorite building that Gaudi designed-La Sagrada Familia, a church. Construction started in 1882, but when I finally went to see it, it was still not even half-built yet. I arrived in Barcelona and took the subway to the part of the city where this church was being built. I finally stood there in front of it, marveling at the building even though it was incomplete. Buildings this church was not as simple as you might think. They’re not using truckloads of steel beams or concrete blocks. This building is being made one block of stone at a time. Practically every stone was carved and formed to a very exact and specific shape.
I went back to Barcelona about fifteen years, but it still wasn’t finished. They say it will be done in 2026. The Bible says that God is also building in heaven-He’s building homes for us! And if I had to guess, I doubt He’s using common beams and blocks.
I would guess that every inch will be specifically designed for us by the ultimate Creator and builder. Just as each person is a unique creation of God; it’s exciting to know that He’s planning a special home for each of us in heaven!
