For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him no eat. For me hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living. 2 THESSALONIANS 3:10-12, ESV
A few years ago I knew I had an upcoming trip to El Salvador, so I started to do some research about what I could see while I was there. After a little research I found out that there was a very special beach in El Salvador along the pacific coast of the country where sea turtles came at certain times of the year to lay their eggs. I also read that this was a government-protected beach.
Once in El Salvador, I arranged for a driver, and soon we were driving from the capital down to the coast. We drove right onto the beach and parked our car on the sand. I could see at least a couple of miles of the beach in both directions. There was not a single person in sight. No one I thought this was unusual. Were we at the wrong place?
We walked toward the water, and about seventy-five feet from the beach we arrived at a little ten-by-ten foot grass hut. As we approached, a small elderly man came out and greeted us. He was there all alone. It turned out we did have the right beach. This elderly man was the one in charge of protecting the area, and he lived in this little hut during the months of the year that eggs are laid until they hatched. He walked me a few feet away to the place where the turtle were hatching in the sand. Hundreds of the baby turtles hatched every day, and I was thrilled that I got to cheer some on as they raced toward the ocean.
Someday you will have a job. You may experience many different jobs. It’s important that you take your responsibility seriously and always do your best. Don’t be lazy or try to get out of doing your work. If you read today’s verse you will see God is pretty serious about this.
