“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the Lord you God is giving you. “ EXODUS 20:12
Since I’ve lived the majority of my family life in the cold climates, the cold has never bothered me much, and each year we embrace the changes that come warm during winter. A few years back I had the privilege of traveling to Cuba. Cuba is special for me for two simple reasons: my mother is Cuban, and my wife is Cuban. Because my wife is Cuban, she still had a lot of direct family members living there. Even though travel to Cuba was not allowed by the US government at that time, she was given special permission to travel to Cuba to visit her family.
Since I was her husband, I was allowed to accompany her. During that trip, we spent more than a week visiting family. One day we were able to get away and went to the beach. There was one beach that I had always wanted to visit since I was a child-Varadero. This was an important beach to our family because I was often told that my parents spend their honeymoon on the beaches of Varadero.
My parents would often comment on how beautiful the beaches were, and now I was anxious to finally discover this place for myself. From Havana we boarded a bus and headed toward Veradero. We spent the day there, and I was not disappointed. The beaches were beautiful, the water was great and the weather was magnificent. Of course, I couldn’t help but reflect that a few decades earlier, my parents were right there too.
Parents are special people who are given the tough job of raising kids. They make mistakes, and they may not always be right or perfect, but it’s still our responsibility to love, to honor, and be respectful of our parents. Go give them a big hug today.
